The Chinese zodiac (shengxiao) assigns one of twelve animals to each year in a repeating cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Enter a year and this tool returns its animal along with the matching earthly branch and a brief note on the personality traits traditionally associated with people born in that year. The animal is found by taking the year modulo twelve against the classic reference sequence.
This tool assigns the animal by calendar year for simplicity. Note that the zodiac year actually turns at Chinese New Year, so anyone born in January or early February should confirm against the true lunar new-year date for their birth year.
